Forgiveness! Don’t we like to think that we are allowed to make people earn our forgiveness? Or at least we are doing something extra noble by forgiving someone. Yet Jesus call us to forgive and when the disciple ask for extra faith to forgive Jesus says that it’s not about the amount of faith but a matter of being an obedient servant.
As Jesus made his way to Jerusalem to die to provide us with unearned forgiveness, I wonder how these words rolled off his lips. I sure they were loaded with the intensity of what was ahead of him. He had already set his face to Jerusalem after the transfiguration (Chapter 9) and now the triumphal entry of Palm Sunday lay just ahead (Chapter 19). Forgiveness…. Freely we have received it, freely we should give it.
